Canada is one of the only countries in the world to participate in refugee resettlement in 2020
2020 is one of the worst years for the refugee resettlement of asylum seekers in modern history. According to the UN Refugee Agency’s Canadian representative, 168 world countries imposed various border and travel restrictions. As a result, millions of displaced people all over the world stuck in limbo, being not able to return home or get asylum elsewhere. Canada stayed loyal to its obligations to the United Nations and kept accepting refugees amidst COVID-19. In 2020, IRCC had planned to resettle around 30,000 refugees. About 6,000 refugees had arrived in Canada by the end of September and by the end of 2020, IRCC expects this number will reach 7,000.
