New invitations are issued to apply for the Parents and Grandparents Program

Last year IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada) introduced new changes to Parents and Grandparents Program, under which the first step requires Canadian citizens and permanent residents to submit an Interest to Sponsor form. Last week IRCC announced the randomly selected sponsors and have a period of 60 days to submit a complete application.

IRCC believes that this type of selection process will fasten the application process and reduce the costs experienced by applicants with the paper-based application.

To accelerate furthermore the application process, new features have also been added to the Parents and Grandparents program. For example, the chosen sponsors are being contacted by IRCC through email. Moreover, individuals are able to find out if they were selected, even before receiving an email, by comparing her/his unique confirmation number with a published list of invitees. This will give an opportunity for sponsors to start their preparation to fill their applications.

Last year IRCC increased the intake limit for this program from 5,000 to 10,000 in order to help more families to unite. It is stated that this limit will make sure that new applicants have the chance to apply and at the same time will reduce the backlog.

During this year, between January 2 and February 1, the potential sponsors submitted an Interest to Sponsor form. It is announced by IRCC that if 10,000 complete applications are not received from randomly selected sponsors, there may be another round of invitations held later in 2018.

In following years, Canada is looking forward to increasing the intake limit for the Parents and Grandparents Program to a total of 61,500 new permanent residences invited through the program by 2020.
