Richmond councilor lobbies against birth tourism
Richmond councillor Carol Day thinks Canada should stop handing out citizenship “like bus passes” to babies birthed by tourists.
Day is encouraging people to write to the new federal Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marco Mendocino to crack down on the practice.
Day said that people who arrive via the immigration system spend years trying to get their Canadian citizenship.
The city cannot regulate “birth tourism houses” per se, rather they can just regulate short-term rentals, and these are only illegal if they contravene STR bylaws or health and safety bylaws, explained city spokesperson Clay Adams.
