Canadian Citizenship

For many people who come to Canada from another country, the desire to stay and make a home here is strong. Whether you initially planned to come to Canada temporarily in order to work or study, or if you set a goal to “become Canadian” years before ever arriving on our shores, once here, many people feel like this is where they would like to lay down roots. The path can be a long one, but citizenship is the ultimate achievement that many aim for. And for a wide array of reasons, the effort is worth it. But how does one become a Canadian citizen if he or she wasn’t born here?

There are a few avenues to citizenship, but no shortcuts. You have to follow a number of set steps, and many of these take time. But to become a citizen, one must first become a permanent resident. If you’ve already obtained permanent resident status in Canada, you may already understand that the process is not simple. There is help though! The team at Mansouri Firm can point you in the right direction, and guide you along your way.

There are a number of fairly straight forward citizenship application requirements:

You must have permanent resident status in Canada. You must not be the subject of an immigration investigation, an immigration inquiry or an order from Canadian officials to leave Canada. And you must be at least 18 years old to apply for Canadian citizenship. Beyond these points, things get a little more intricate, and it could be very helpful to retain the services of well trained and experienced immigration experts.

For instance, you must be physically present in Canada with permanent resident status for 3 years in total over a five-year period. More precisely, the law spelled out a requirement of 1095 days in Canada over that period of time. However, you can count some of your time in Canada previous to obtaining permanent residency as half-days toward this requirement. Not all applicants will have a straight forward timeline with which to calculate their time in Canada, and it can get confusing when trying to determine how many days will qualify as being “present in Canada”. We can advise you in this area, and in other areas where the requirements are not easy to follow. For just a couple of other complicated areas relevant to your citizenship application, consider topics like income tax filing requirements, and possible criminality issues, items that can be complicated for anyone. Let us assist you!

We can help you fill out the application form, gather all necessary documents and file your application with the citizenship case processing center with confidence. If you are successful with your application, you are well on your way, but there is still work to be done. When you have met all of the requirements to become a Canadian citizen, you will be invited attend a ceremony to take the oath of citizenship, and we will help you prepare for this to. Citizenship is within reach, but Mansouri Firm wants to make sure you cross the finish line without any setbacks.
